Thierry Hermès founded the company in 1837 as a harness workshop in Paris. Primarily, his intent was to serve the needs of European noblemen by providing saddles, bridles and other leather riding gear. Progressively the company’s product offerings expanded through generations . In 1918, Hermès introduced the first leather golf jacket with a zipper (now known as ‘Fermeture Hermes’), made for the then Prince of Wales, hence marking their entry in the fashion universe.

In today’s world of luxury, Hermès enjoys an iconic status. It has consistently been ranked as the world’s most valuable luxury brand. A combination of rich heritage, exquisite craftsmanship, eye for detail and high levels of quality and professionalism through the entire manufacturing process which gives Hermès a position of superiority in the very competitive and ruthless world of luxury. Currently, the range of products under the brand include ready-to-wear, bags, fragrances, watches, jewellery, furniture, leather goods and saddlery. Bags being the biggest contributor to the company’s revenue in the previous financial year.

To own an Hermes bag is to own a piece of history and functional art. There are over 80 types of Hermes handbags, totes, bucket bags, shoulder bags, and crossbody bags to meet various styles and circumstances. The Birkin bag, Kelly bag, and Constance shoulder bag are undeniably the most in demand. Credit Suisse reported that in 2022, the Kelly bag increased 16% from the prior period and 92% over the past decade. Time Magazine found that over the past 35 years, the average annual return on a Birkin was 14.2%, compared to the S&P average of 8.7% a year and gold’s – 1.5%.

My preference for the brand as my favourite fashion brand could be influenced by several factors. Its reputation for luxury and high-quality craftsmanship and iconic and timeless designs are the very common reasons why fashion enthusiasts prefer the brand. Its sustainability of natural resources is my primary reason of label being my first preference. The brand strives to control its water and energy consumption as well as its carbon footprint throughout production. In addition, Hermès has also made commitments and is carrying out actions for the preservation of biodiversity.
