Selkie

Whilst I’m not sure that I could wear this brand casually, the Spring 2024 collection at NYFW was one of my favorite fashion shows this season and in my opinion, totally encapsulated the whimsical nature and ethos of the brand. Owned by women and run by women, the brand is typically recognized for their puff-sleeved, empire-waisted, baby doll silhouette paired with bold, feminine prints or pastel colours. What initially interested me about this brand is the strangely, psychological reason for their rise to popularity in 2020. Whilst many in the pandemic were sitting at home watching Bridgerton, Selkie seemed to find a gap in the market with their gorgeous, fairytale dresses and Rococo-styled campaigns that enabled consumers to escape the boredom of quarantine into this magical, fairytale world (somewhat reminiscent of the tv show). Three years later, the brand continues to be successful with their latest show depicting a series of characters, split into various acts titled ‘Fairy Hunters’ and ‘Metamorphosis’. Despite the enchanting silhouettes and red, mushroom-print dresses, what really made the brand stand out for me was their undeniable commitment to diversifying their models. Whilst this is not anything new for the brand, I still found it amazing to see models of all age, colour and size not just walking but dancing down the runway in show that was professionally choreographed to further create and transport viewers into this magical, spell-binding world. For me, Selkie has really set the standard for diversity on the runway this season and all in all is a brand I love for it’s undeniably beautiful dresses and magical pieces.
